Geography Summer 1 Map Detectives
During the summer 1 half term year one became map detectives, learning about what maps are and how to use them. We looked at maps at different scales, located our school on maps of England, the North West, Lancashire and Baxenden We found familiar landmarks on maps using compass and land feature clues and even went on to draw our own maps based a village we created using toys from Mrs Kennedy’s class. We discovered the importance of orientating our maps when trying to follow them. For our geography fieldwork we went out into the school grounds and looked at photographs of Jofli Bear in different locations. Using an aerial photograph of the school grounds and a map we plotted where Jofli had been playing. To conclude our unit and show off our understanding of maps we plotted a route for Jofli to travel from school to the bridge on the old railway lines so he could have a picnic. We used map symbols to help us do this. We are definitely super map detectives!
