Autumn 1 2022
We have had an incredibly busy first half term. The children have worked brilliantly during our English unit of ‘Narnia – The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and produced some superb non-chronological reports based on mythical creatures that they will be using in their own innovated chapters next half term. In Maths, I have been really impressed with everyone’s knowledge of place value and we have worked on securing our mental and formal methods to support our arithmetic skills. In Science, we have completed a range of experiments looking a different materials. The children can now explain a variety of material properties and we really enjoyed finding out if materials were soluble or insoluble. Our Geography topic of ‘Are We Damaging Our World’ has been fascinating as we have delved into different biomes and looked at a range of human impacts and settlements. Everyone really enjoyed our focus artist this half-term: Banksy. We focused on his ‘Clacton Pigeon Mural’ and not only have the children developed their stencil and digital artwork, they have also expressed their British Values incredibly creatively by creating their own Banksy-inspired inclusive mural. The children have also been developing their balance and coordination skills in PE during our gymnastics lessons as well as their map reading and endurance skills through our orienteering unit. In French, we have been busy shopping and then in music we’ve been having great fun with ‘What shall we do with a drunken’ sailor where we have looked at beats, body percussion and various harmonies. To top off a busy half term, we also managed to squeeze in European Language Day where our focus language was German, ‘Guten Tag!’ and then finished with a fantastic Multicultural Week! During this week, we focused on the religions of Islam and Hinduism through various activities and workshops (we had great fun performing a traditional Hindi dance and trying some delicious samosas) and then completed the first half of our Black History Unit: The Slave Ship Hope. This linked brilliantly to our local history and the children were astounded by the atrocities that happened in Lancashire during the Slave Trade Period. All the children are really looking forward to continuing this unit into Year 6 next year! We hope you enjoy looking through a few photos from Autumn 1 and we can’t wait to start our learning after the holidays!
