Music
Our school helps us to walk with Jesus, to be the best that we can be. Through God’s love and guidance, we create an ethos of shared endeavour, friendship and co-operation to help us flourish academically, emotionally and spiritually.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato
Music Intent at Baxenden St John’s
At Baxenden St. John’s our intention is that all children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. Our objective is to develop a curiosity and enjoyment for the subject of music as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity of all types of music, both here and around the world. We expect our pupils to show an unbiased respect for the manner in which music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life and we are committed to ensuring that all children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community. We encourage and enable all our children to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of contexts. Please see our music development plan and policy below.
Purpose and provision:
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Here at Baxenden St. John’s we aim to provide a high-quality musical education which engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. In their lessons, children are invited to develop critical engagement with music allowing them to compose and to listen with discrimination to a wide range of high-quality pieces.
We provide pupils in Key Stage One and Two with many opportunities to learn to play a musical instrument – as a whole class or through small group tuition. Children in Key Stage Two are also invited to join the school choir and are given regular opportunities to perform both in and outside of school. Singing is an integral part of our worship and an expression of our faith through music and we enjoy maintaining our strong links with Blackburn Cathedral and local high schools through regular collaboration.
Aims:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the work of great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
