Physical Education

Our school helps us to walk with Jesus, to be the best that we can be. Through God’s love and guidance, we create an ethos of shared endeavour, friendship and co-operation to help us flourish academically, emotionally and spiritually.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
Intent
Physical Education at Baxenden St John’s CE Primary aims to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so they can perform with enjoyment, confidence and competence across a range of physical activity. The school scheme of work provides a range of physical activities and ensures balance, progression and development is achieved.
The curriculum allows opportunities for children to experience competitive sport and succeed and achieve at their own level through personal best challenges. It also provides valuable opportunities to build character development and embed values.
Physical Education at Baxenden St John’s CE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying and promotes and educates pupils to understand, develop and value a physical active lifestyle for life.
It is our intention to help prepare and inspire our pupils with a positive outlook on physical activity and to become physically literate leading to the development of a healthy active lifestyle. This is achieved through a progressive curriculum which is developmentally appropriate to each cohort and provides many opportunities to experience physical activity and school sport both within and outside of the curriculum.
Physical Education at Baxenden St John’s CE
Physical Education and School Sport has a high profile at Baxenden St John’s and we encourage all pupils to recognise the benefit of being active and participating in competitive sport.
In recognition of our commitment to PE, Physical Activity and School Sport we have been awarded the School Games Gold Mark, first in 2013 then consecutively until 2017 when we became eligible for the Platinum Award. Following a successful case study report we achieved Platinum status in 2017 and have continued to achieve this accolade every year since, continually evaluating our provision and aiming to improve what we offer for the benefit of all our pupils. During the pandemic we were awarded recognition for our commitment to physical education and activity despite the restrictions placed on schools and the country.
In September 2019 we were awarded Hyndburn Primary School of the Year for Sport at the Hyndburn Sports Awards. Following this evening we went through to the Lancashire Sports Awards and we were delighted to win Lancashire Primary School of the Year for Sport! An amazing achievement for everyone at school! We continue to have high expectations and strive to continue to build on our positive foundations year on year. Our commitment to this was rewarded again as we received the title of Hyndburn Primary School of the Year 2022 at the Hyndburn Sports Awards and went on to win Active Lancashire’s Primary School of the Year Award 2022. A fantastic accolade and example of how everyone in our school has a “shared endeavour to help our pupils flourish”
In September 2025 Mrs Baynes and Mrs Williams attended the North West Counties Physical Education Association’s annual awards evening and after a successful nomination we were crowned award winners of the Gill Parry Best Practice In PE (Primary Schools) for 2025. An award we are very proud to receive and we are hopefully following on the legacy created by Gill who was infamous for her work in Physical Education across the country.
The PE curriculum covers;
- Games –skills and tactics from invasion games, striking and fielding games and net and wall games.
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Swimming (KS2)
- Outdoor and Adventurous Education
- Athletics
Within this subject area there will be opportunities to compete at a personal level (improving own PB) at intra level (between class members) and at an inter level (against other local schools) Although we pride ourselves on always performing to the best of our ability and winning medals is our ultimate aim we also use these opportunities to develop the School Games Values of: Honesty, Teamwork, Respect, Passion, Determination and Self Respect. We offer a range of after school sports clubs which are open to all abilities. We also place high emphasis on achieving and improving our own “Personal Best” across a range of skills.
In addition to curriculum PE there are many opportunities for pupils to become leaders of sport. In school we have; Sports Captains, Playground Leaders and Wellbeing Warriors.
We work closely with the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools Sports Partnership providing opportunities for pupils to participate in PE and sports outside of school.
